ABOUT
THE ARTIST
Lillian
Winkler's paintings have a sense of stillness and have been described
as "dreamlike." Her art keeps evolving and becomes more
complex with every new experience. The result is a body of work
that skillfully blends nature and abstraction, sometimes in energized
images and at other times in tranquil and contemplative evocations.
Winkler
started drawing when she was four. At the age of sixteen, she decided
to paint an oil landscape. The venture inspired her to take various
art courses in high school and college. She graduated from design
school in the early 1970's and went on to practice interior design
for several years while still in Chicago. Upon moving to the west
coast, she decided to finally pursue art as a career. Lillian attended
classes and workshops with professional artists who taught "plein
air." She also studied under an expressionist painter for some
time. After this encounter, her distinct style finally emerged.
When
the artist paints, her inspiration comes about because of the process.
Several paintings that are in different stages of completion are
worked on at the same time. When Lillian starts a painting, she
doesn't know how it will turn out. The various patterns that evolve
point her in a specific direction. She enjoys the mystery of it
all. It is through this daily experimentation that the ideas come
to fruition.
Lillian
is an Artist Member of the California Art Club. She maintains
a studio in Laguna Beach, California, where she paints and exhibits
her work.
